“What is a record company going to do for me that I can’t do for myself? Nothing.”

This is so blog worthy it almost came straight out of my mouth. Ice Cube to release next album independently:

What is a record company going to do for me that I can’t do for myself? Nothing. . . It’s nothing they can offer me to have a major percent of my record. It’s really all about ownership at this time. This is not a new page in the game. This an old page. People are caught up in double, triple platinum. That’s lovely, but what’s double platinum if you not getting double-platinum money? It’s all about what you take home to your family at the end of the day if you gonna make this game a profession.

I’ve heard a lot of great stories (Royce da 5’9″, Immortal Technique) about cats that put out records by themselves that make loads more money than the big players. Sure they don’t get greased up for videos as much, but when you make ten dollars a record, you do not give a god damn. Hire your own damn grease girl.

Ice Cube, I will be glad to play your record and support your decision.

Ani DiFranco has been proving this all along. She realized that from the start and worked her way up on her own.

The Barenaked ladies are doing the same thing. They’ve reached the end of a major-label contract and have decided they don’t need them either.

It’s a new world and the traditional recording industry is a dinosaur.

There are thousands of lower-tier independant musicians who are self-publishing themselves and maybe not getting rich, but aren’t going into debt to a record company either.

    P. S. Julien, it was great to meet you at Podcamp Toronto!
