Digging out the albums

Fucking Facebook is starting to piss me off. Between 1-3 times per day, it’s now sending me notes that people I no longer really wanted contact with (mostly during my highly awkward high school phase) want to be my friends again– whether they were in the first place, who knows.

I’ve already sacrified present and future privacy to the internet. It probably knows all of my friendships, acquaintances, relationships, and wrongdoings over the past 5+ years. Now, it wants access to my past as well.

I remember a point in human history where we had the opportunity to leave the person we were behind as we moved forward. Now, this is being lost… and I’m not sure it’s with consent.

I’m with you — I have no interest in reliving that rather unpleasant four years of my life, and that’s one of the reasons I’ve stayed away from places like “Facebook” and “Classmates”.

I don’t think you can completely run away from your past, but I think you should be in control of just how much of it encroaches on your present.

Just say no, as Hugh said.

Plus the Privacy settings of Facebook allows you to restrict your information only to your close friends. It is also possible to add people to your blocklist.

I made my profile only available to my close friends, and I only add close friends. And it feels much better that way.

Only solution = facebook hara kiri. I did it. So can you. 😉

Steven Mansour committed mass virtual suicide earlier this year. I’m to chicken to follow quite yet.

The interbutt only knows what you or other people tell it. Those people from high school who found you likely found you because you told Facebook what high school you attended.

Don’t want people to remember your high school years? Don’t mention your high school. Myself, I had a job once working for a guy who tried, with the help of police and lawyers, to destroy my life. I don’t mention that job or that guy’s name on the intarwebs.

You haven’t lost the ability to leave the person you were behind. In the minds of those people, Facebook or no, you are still the same kid from high school. Only difference is that, instead of being out of sight and out of mind, Facebook can remind you that those people with outdated perceptions are still out there. It certainly doesn’t need to impact who you are today.

I think what bothers some people the most about services like Facebook and Classmates is that it makes you accessible to creepy/embarrassing former sex partners and the people from your old high school who knew you when you had a mushroom cut with a bleached rat tail, wore checkered LA Gear bandannas and fluorescent Patrick Ewing high-tops.

You know, before you were kewl…

Wow: the first thing I read about Facebook that I agree with!

I checked it out, then unsubscribed. I don’t see the need, frankly. My life is stretched out as it is, and strangely enough I find I can keep in touch with people without it – and without a cell phone. Strange, huh?
