Slavery

We hear about slavery a lot in an abstract form, but I’ve never seen anything like this before– it’s from the Quebec Gazette, from the year 1767.

I used to work for a company that digitized newspapers and put them online.

You would be amazed at some of the crazy ass shit you could find in newspapers from 100+ years ago.

I shit you not, one particular ad I found was for an apron made out of asbestos.

crazy, right? there’s a book on lynchings that goes even deeper. forgot the title, but it’s pretty ill. black men hanging from trees with a white mob taking pictures and posing in front of the body. yeah, it’s like that. cats would advertise in the paper when and where the lynching was going to be. they’ve got photocopies of that in the book, too. even handwritten letters between family members talking about going to a lynching like they went to a picnic or a circus or something.

can’t say it’s your standard coffee table fare, but it does give a keen and unquestionable insight of what lies at america’s core…
